Climate Change Lecture Reflection
Climate Change Lecture Reflection
This week, we were given the opportunity to listen to a lecture regarding climate change. This lecture was important to me for two reasons: first, I think climate change is a very real, very scary event happening in the world right now and it is important to educate ourselves on why it is happening and what we can do to stop it. Secondly, this lecture was important because our fieldwork for this class is going to focus on climate change, and this class has given us all some insight on things to include in our lesson plans.
In the past, I have taken it upon myself to educate myself about the realities and dangers of climate change. My generation has grown up with global warming embedded into our science classes at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. So going into this class, I had some extensive prior knowledge regarding carbon emissions, rising sea levels, the effects climate change has on inclement weather, etc. However, I was excited for this lecture because I am always looking to better educate myself and learn more about what we need to do in order to reverse climate change before it is too late. So to me, this lecture was very impactful.
The lecture definitely gave me some better insight about the realities of climate change. As individuals, it is important we try to reduce our carbon footprints as much as possible. However, the reality of the situation is bigger than just us. Large corporations participate in practices such as mining, deforestation, and extraction that are all contributing to the problem in a huge way. One thing I learned from this lecture that scared me was that the Washington Post posted a picture of a clock in Times Square that is counting down the time we have left to reverse climate change before it is too late-- we only have seven years left before we destroy the Earth to the point of no return.
This is a topic I feel extremely strongly about, and this lecture was extremely important to me. I hope my fellow classmates were able to take away a lot of new information about the severity of climate change. I also hope it motivates them to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle, because we don’t have much time left, and change is dependent on all of us.
