Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s video on Science Literacy

Neil DeGrasse Tyson's video on science literacy really got me thinking about the importance of a basic understanding of science in the real world, not just a classroom.  This video was interesting to me because of a comment Tyson made saying, "If you understand how the world works and what the limitations are, then you can judge whether someone is trying to exploit you." I found this interesting because it was a concept I had never really heard out loud before, even though it might be a concept we take for granted and do without thinking.  Tyson emphasized the idea that science literacy empowers us.  He claims we are susceptible to self-delusion (which I agree with) and basic science literacy allows us to know what's real and what isn't.  Tyson also mentions that innovations of science, technology, and math are relevant to us even if we don't think so.  I think this is definitely true.  As Tyson said, we don't all have to be scientists, but we have to at least know what's going on and I think that's a very important concept to keep in mind.  Science is all about asking questions, and utilizing that skill in the classroom can definitely help us outside of it, too.
